We would love to have a few volunteers come help us sort and punch holes in student work. Any time you are available during the school day is fine. Please email me if you can help with this project. As part of our last theme, Earth, we will be creating our own islands out of salt dough. If your family would be willing to make salt dough this weekend and send it in, we would really appreciate it. Please let me know if you are going to send in dough so I will know how much I need to make. Here is the recipe 1/2 cup of salt 1/2 cup of water 1 cup of flour Add the 1/2 cup of salt and 1 cup of flour to a bowl, and stir in the water adding it slowly. You may not need all of the water. May 29th - Memorial Day Holiday - No School May 30th - Last day of School Literacy Update: We are working on sight words, letter sounds, digraphs and contractions. In writing the Author, Illustrator, and Editor writing groups are practicing writing complete sentences that begin with a capital letter, including spaces between words, and end with punctuation. Publisher and Printer writing groups are learning how to write a paragraph including a main idea, details, and a conclusion. Math Update: Artists are working on Chapter 9, numbers 11-20. Scientists completed Chapter 10 today and will begin their last subtraction unit tomorrow. Theme Update: We are working on matter for the next few weeks. I have included the permission slip at the end of this newsletter in case you need an extra copy. Classroom Updates Literacy - On Monday we read a biography of Dr. Seuss. This week we are reading Dr. Seuss books and discussing his unique writing and illustrating style. We will be creating our own "Seuss-like" animals and reviewing rhyming words. Math- Artists are working their way through their final chapter on addition and subtraction. We are working on noticing when we need to add and when we need to subtract based on clues in a story problem. We are learning about how addition and subtraction facts are related. Scientists are finishing up their study of place value and will begin comparing two digit numbers. Theme - We are finishing up our study of habitats by making dioramas.
